Kizhi Island is the most visited and recognizable place in Karelia. The Kizhi Museum-Reserve, located on the island, is the center of the traditional peasant culture of the Russian North, one of the largest and most famous open-air museums in Russia. Thoroughly and painstakingly, scientists and masters of wooden architecture for many years brought here architectural monuments, icon paintings and household items that were created in Karelian, Veps and Russian villages for centuries.
But the main treasure - the Kizhi churchyard, consisting of the Transfiguration, Intercession churches and the bell tower - has been standing here for more than 300 years.
